The Canadian Ski Patrol rents classrooms facilities from Riverview
Hospital in Port Coquitlam, about 45 minutes east of downtown Vancouver on the
Lougheed Highway.
Riverview is situated on 240 acres of land overlooking the Fraser and
Coquitlam rivers. When driving, please observe the posted speed and be mindful
of day patients walking about.
A Warning
Riverview's street layout is very confusing and visitors more often than not
find themselves woefully lost in Riverview's famous Gordian Knot of streets and
alleyways. Riverview's grounds were established well before motorcars. Being
built on the side of a hill, the streets started out as rather winding walkways
that follow contours more than they do lines on a map.
Don't Panic
If you get lost, it's not your fault. You probably thought that these
directions would actually make sense. There probably isn't a single GVZ member
who hasn't driven aimlessly about trying to make sense out of the twisted maze
of streets. If this happens to you, don't panic. There are lots of
friendly security officers driving around. Simply
flag down one and ask for directions. The worst thing you could do is continue
driving around until you run out of gas at which point you'll discover that
getting out of Riverview by foot is much easier. All you have to
do is walk downhill.
Driving from Vancouver
Riverview Hospital is 45 minutes east of downtown Vancouver (20 minutes from
Boundary Road) and is easily accessible from the Lougheed Highway. Take #1
highway to the #7 exit (Port Coquitlam). Head east towards Port Coquitlam about
5-6 km. You'll see a sign for Riverview Hospital on your left. Ignore it.
Continue driving 1 km. You'll see a big ugly* brown brick building on your left.
Just past that there's a turn-off lane and the entrance to Thyme on your left.
* It so ugly that the movie industry loves it having used it as a Chinese
prison in a Jackie Chan movie and as the evil Manticor's HQ in Dark Angel.
Driving from Port Coquitlam
Take #7 westbound until you see the signs for Riverview Hospital on your
right. IGNORE THIS SIGN - DRIVE PAST. Drive another kilometer or two until
you find the entrance at Thyme. It's your first left.
Public Transit
They say it is relatively easy to get to Riverview Hospital by bus. It might
be easy, but it's certainly not fast. From what we've been told, set aside about
two hours to take Public Transit from Vancouver.
The nearest Sky-Train connection is New Westminster. Bus schedules change
from time to time, so we suggest that you phone B.C. Transit (604) 521-0400 for
the most current schedule and routes.
Good luck! (Are you sure you can't borrow a car or carpool?)
