Greater Vancouver Zone (GVZ) is part of the Canadian Ski Patrol System (CSPS). The
Canadian Ski Patrol System consists of over 5,000 patrollers who provide first aid and
rescue services across Canada. Our national body, located in Ottawa, sets the curriculum
for our first aid course as well as sets for both our first aid and on-hill
national standards for our patrollers. The Canadian Ski Patrol System is a member of
the Heart and Stroke Foundation as well as partner to the Canadian Avalanche
Association and Smart-risk Foundation.
Geographically, Greater Vancouver Zone covers the Greater Vancouver Area and
Manning Park as well as Vancouver Island. GVZ is part of Pacific South Division
(PSD) which covers southern British Columbia.
With nearly 150
active members, GVZ provides services to three ski resorts (Seymour, Hemlock,
and Manning) as well as first aid training to Mike Wiegle's Heli-Ski operations in Blue River, BC.
In addition to being volunteer ski patrollers, we are also very active in
providing first aid services for other sporting events such as the Five Peaks
Running series and the MS Bike Ride.
We are actively promoting safety through the SnowSmart programme which takes
the message of responsible skiing and snowboarding to high school students in
the Lower Mainland. Starting in 2002, we will be actively promoting the use of
helmets while skiing and snowboarding.
Greater Vancouver Zone is involved in the Vancouver Olympic Bid for the 2010
Winter Olympics.
